Hyundai and Kia are different companies, but they share a lot in common, and the scan tool is one of these things.
For many years, the Hi-Scan Pro was the factory hand-held scan tool. It included a software card with reflash files for the vehicles, too. It has been obsolete for many years now, and to even attempt to try to upgrade it for the newer cars would be an expensive mistake (you occasionally see them on ebay, cheap).
The Carman Scan hand-held tool was a similar great tool and was also sold in a 'lite' version. It worked well, and many shops still have it. The manufacturer of the Carman Scan lost the contract to be the Hyundai/Kia dealer scan tool several years ago and has since changed ownership at least once, if not twice.
G.I.T took over the Hyundai/Kia Dealer scan tool contract and built the Dealer GDS.
The Dealer GDS (Global Diagnostic System) uses a laptop and an interface module to connect to the vehicle. This choice is not cheap. To buy the hardware and software for Hyundai and Kia is approx $4900.00 with a $1200.00 per year subscription. This tool is able to reflash right from the tool and flash files are stored on the hard drive. It is discontinued as of January 2017, and the new design scan tool is terribly expensive.
We still sell this $4900.00 tool for $3495.00 with CF-19 dual boot laptop with Hyundai and Kia. Flash files are good through December 2016 and can diagnose 2017 vehicles. There are no further updates available to this scan tool, but the old interface is still required to be able to reprogram older cars, since the new scan tool interface won’t work.
The new scan tool has come out, and it is very expensive. You now use a special tablet and only one manufacturer on it, so you need two tablets. With the interface, it's approximately $9995.00, and yearly updates are $2600.00 per year.
